How I Do a No Spend Month

If you've been following me on Instagram for a while you may have noticed that about every second month I like to do a "No Spend Month".

I have a habit of over spending or wasting money on items that I don't necessarily need because they are on sale or buying stuff on amazon late at night when I can't sleep. I often overspend on craft supplies, beauty products, monthly subscriptions,  clothing and takeout coffee (Opps? *interest shrugging emoji women here*)

In January I read the book A Year of Less by Cait Flanders and it inspired me to clean out my closet and house to get rid of stuff I don't use, wear or like & to stop spending extra money on things I already have at home. For example, I had about 10 bottles of shampoo but if I went to the store and a new one was on sale id buy it and start using that one, putting the half used bottle on the shelf. ( I have a issue with buying things just because they're on sale. I'm slowly getting over it).

I also started reading blogs where they had No Spend Months. Months where they tried their hardest not to spend any extra money on things like clothes, coffee, take out food, on the go snacks, etc. I was inspired by this too, because I love a challenge, and I stared trying to do my own.

Were nearing on September, which means Christmas is just around the corner. The one time of year where I justify my endless spending. Every year we overspend on gifts for the kids, relatives and each other and my goal this year is to set a budget and stick to it. I've already started my Christmas list and set the amounts to spend on each person! (Yay, adulting!). I plan on making a lot of handmade gifts this year which help with the budgeting as I can spend the budget on supplies and give a great gift that cost a little less.

So to help me try and stick to it, and also save money to spend for christmas, Im going to do a no spend month starting today. Im going to outline my process & ive made a printable template for you to download so you can join in on the fun! If you decide to do a no spend month, post your progress in your stories and tag me, id love to follow along!

To start my No Spend Month, I deleted all temptation from my emails. So I unsubscribed to any marketing emails such as walmart, torrid, etc that might tempt me to spend with sales emails.

Then, I go through my subscriptions and decide if anything on the list isn't really and necessity. Currently my month subscriptions are Audible & picmonkey, and dog food on Amazon. I've already weeded out my list and these are here to stay.

Next I decide my rules and exceptions. This month I'm not going to purchase any clothes, beauty products, take out including take out coffee, craft supplies that aren't for a set project, books, knitting patterns (another addiction), extra business supplies (im going to use up what I have). My exceptions to spending are groceries, gas, birthday gifts, sneakers and backpacks for caleb and noah to return to school ( Ive already purchased their other supplies) & Christmas gifts from the budget. Anything that I spend money on outside the exceptions will count as a spend and I will track this on the back of my sheet so I can add up all my overspending for the month.

I may think of more exceptions over the next few days but for the most part thats it. I find this a fun way to keep track of spending and to budget. I will update how its going each Monday for the next month so you can see how its done!

Until next time,

Katherine.
